Sustainable Construction and Urbanism

There are only 5 institutions in the world authorized as official BREEAM® certifying bodies and our technology center is one of them. We are the private non-profit institution chosen by BRE Global Ltd. in 2009 as the only institution authorized to award the BREEAM® (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) sustainable construction certification in Spain.

It is the world’s leading and most technically advanced method to assess and certify construction sustainability. 541,000 certificates have been awarded in 77 countries by this private and voluntary method since its creation in 1990, for the purpose of promoting more sustainable, efficient and eco-friendly buildings.

It establishes 10 valuable concepts for buildings (Energy, Water, Health and Wellbeing, Materials, Transport, Waste, Management, Land Use and Ecology, Pollution and Innovation) and gives a score based on a scale of 5 levels or stars.

We are the institution authorized by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) to manage the implementation of the WELL certificate in Spain and South America. This agreement was made in 2018 and strengthens the position of our technology center as a leading institution, at the national and international level, in terms of sustainable construction.

WELL is an assessment and certification method that focuses on the health and wellbeing of the occupants of the building. 1,021 projects of 37 countries have been authorized by this private and voluntary method since its creation in 2014.

The quality of the buildings around us has a direct impact on our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, as well as our ability to work. In its new v2 version, WELL covers three new concepts, which makes a total of ten (Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind, Community) and determines four certification levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

BIM, Green Infrastructure and Official Base Prices for Construction

Three-dimensional, real-time Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the revolution that is taking place in architecture.

This modeling covers the geometry of the building, spatial relations, geographic data and the amounts and properties of its components.

There are currently no reliable standards that can be used as a reference for the creation of BIM product models, and that is one of the goals of the innovation project under way by ITG and Cupa Group: using BIM to model their products and enable their integration in the building’s global model.

Said project is carried out by a team of architects, quantity surveyors and engineers from ITG, trained and experienced in BIM environments.

In June 2013, the European Commission adopted a strategy to foster the use of green infrastructures, acknowledging the serious consequences that the damage currently caused to the ecosystems may have on the health and economy of European citizens.

An ITG team made up of architects, quantity surveyors, civil engineers and industrial engineers have started working on a solution to integrate biodiversity in European regulations and the EU strategy on biodiversity until the year 2020. Thanks to their work, it will be possible to assist local and regional administrations with the implementation of policies related to agriculture, forests, fishing, land planning or energy, among others.

Its development in the Standard Database Exchange Format (FIBDC), readable by all budgeting and market measurement programs, makes it a necessary work tool to prepare construction budgets and an essential reference source.

In Galicia, the Official Construction Prices Database was created in 1995 and is now in its 15th edition thanks to the efforts of the Galician Institute for Housing and Land. As a result of its technical accuracy, the Regional Ministry of Housing, Public Works and Transport of the Basque Government hired us in 2009 to create its own Official Construction and Urban Infrastructure Database. Said database is now in its second edition and has also become a reference source for this industry.
